Following the ecstatic response to their #JerusalemaChallenge dance video, Gardai have decided to launch a viral sensation of their own to honour former colleague, Sergeant Maurice McCabe. The valiant whistleblower was relentlessly harassed by his fellow workmates for revealing endemic corruption in the force, in the process being labelled a “cheese-eating rat bastard”. Garda Press Officer, Eileen NiCapim, hopes the latest video will remind “any potential new martyrs that informants will not be tolerated.”
“Well, it’s been a little over two years since we viciously hounded Maurice out of the force, accusing him of everything from paedophilia to perjury. The last thing we want is any more moral crusaders getting any ideas. Much like the gangster code of silence we come up against in the criminal underworld every day, we too have our own omertà.”
“When it came to depicting the biggest tout in the history of the Gardai, it didn’t take long to brainstorm a concept for the video. I rang Sir Bob Geldof up and he said go for it man, so of course, we went with “Rat Trap” by The Boomtown Rats for the theme song. “The song is jovial enough to dance to, but still sinister enough in threatening that any future rats will be trapped.”
“To be explicit with our message, we all donned giant rat heads and screamed “rat trap” into the camera at every opportunity. Just like Sir Bob does at the beginning of his infamous Top Of The Pops performance, we too tear up a photograph, only this time it’s our rodent friend, McCabe. By emphasising the relevant lyrics and imagery it should leave the viewer in no confusion that we mean business.”
The video can be found at #ratbastardmccabe and all proceeds go to the Garda Social Club.
